Giving Best Service at Low Prices

For many people it can be confusing as to what is and isn’t required when looking to book your car in for a car service or van service.

Every manufacturer provide comprehensive truck, van and car servicing schedules but these are an expensive option as the cost of parts and labour from the main dealers can be very high.

Independent garages such as ourselves at Fife Autocentres have the luxury of being able to purchase quality manufactured branded parts much cheaper than main dealers who have to source directly from manufacturers who often charge a premium.

Put simply a car service, van service or truck service consists of a checklist of measurements  and tasks to be performed in order to maintain the safe and cost effective running of the vehicle.

Whilst the vehicle servicing schedule is set out by the manufacturer, any vehicle that is over three years old then also needs to pass a minimum standards test laid down by the ministry of transport, this is called the MOT test, vehicles that pass this test are then awarded a MOT test certificate allowing then to legally be run on the road.

Types of Car Servicing We Offer

In most cases there are three levels of car service available, broadly speaking these fit into the following categories:

  • Basic Service
  • Interim Service
  • Full Service

A basic service which will usually include a change if the oil, oil filters, top up the differing fluids in the vehicle such as brake fluid, washer fluid, steering fluid etc and a good visual inspection of the vehicle.

For those vehicles that have a high mileage over say 20,000 miles per year it is often advisable to have a fuller annual service in addition to the basic service the interim service will usually an additional oil change and routine basic maintenance checks such as tyre wear, checking for leaking hoses and light bulbs. Garages will also check the fluid levels and top up as necessary.

Some will even take off the tyres and check the brake pads for wear & tear.

Full Service

The full service will often include other more detailed checks and reports, and usually follows the service schedule laid out in the manufacturers servicing handbook.

  • Oil and air filter change
  • Diesel engines may require a replacement fuel filter
  • Petrol engine vehicles may need new spark plugs
  • Extensive checks for leaks, wear and damage, including steering system and driveshaft
  • Removal of wheels and brakes plus wheel bearings checked
  • Brake, handbrake and fuel hoses checked for leaks or damage
  • Check suspension for wear & tear
  • Tyres & exhaust checked thoroughly
